5 Christmas Destinations Worth Considering for 2026

Madison Austin

Five destinations with established 2026 holiday traditions, memorable settings, and plenty to experience beyond the lights and markets.

Search for Christmas travel ideas and the same destinations appear almost immediately: New York City, London, Vienna, and Strasbourg.

They are popular for a reason. But there are other places with strong holiday traditions, beautiful settings, and enough to enjoy beyond Christmas itself. These are my recommendations for the 2026 holiday season, based on the 2026 event schedules currently available. These five are worth a closer look.

Natchitoches, Louisiana

Natchitoches, Louisiana at Christmas

Best for: Southern Christmas traditions, major light displays, and a holiday trip closer to home.

Natchitoches is Louisiana's oldest city, and its Christmas Festival of Lights brings the historic district to life for roughly six weeks. More than 300,000 lights and 100 illuminated set pieces line Cane River Lake, with reflections that make the riverfront especially memorable after dark.

In 2026, the city celebrates the 100th annual Natchitoches Christmas Festival. Festival weekends bring fireworks, entertainment, and markets, while decorated-home tours and additional displays add reasons to linger.

The lights are only part of the appeal. The walkable historic district and nearby Creole history of the Cane River region make this an easy place to turn a holiday outing into a full weekend.

Don't miss: The riverfront after dark, when the displays reflect across Cane River Lake.

Solvang, California

Solvang, California at Christmas

Best for: Danish Christmas traditions, wine country, and a milder version of the holiday season.

Founded by Danish immigrants, Solvang is full of windmills, half-timbered buildings, Scandinavian details, and bakeries. It already has the feel of a European village before Julefest begins.

Solvang Julefest is scheduled for November 27, 2026 through January 3, 2027. The season includes a tree-lighting ceremony, the Julefest Parade, and recurring Wednesday Maker's Markets inspired by European night markets.

What makes Solvang a fuller trip is its Santa Ynez Valley setting. A Christmas weekend can also include wineries, tasting rooms, restaurants, and the countryside around Santa Barbara.

Don't miss: Build in time beyond central Solvang; it works especially well as part of a Santa Ynez Valley itinerary.

Québec City, Québec

Québec City, Québec at Christmas

Best for: An old-world Christmas atmosphere without a transatlantic flight.

Old Québec's narrow streets, stone buildings, steep staircases, and centuries-old architecture do much of the work before the first market stall opens. Petit-Champlain and Place-Royale are especially inviting once holiday lights come on.

The Québec City German Christmas Market runs November 19 through December 23, 2026 across six Old Québec locations. Its wooden chalets, seasonal food, drinks, gifts, and entertainment are paired with the Grand Christmas Market, scheduled November 21 through December 24, with more than 250 food businesses, artisans, and artists.

The holiday programming is lovely, but the lasting reason to visit is the city itself. Québec City gives travelers in the U.S. much of the old-world atmosphere they may be seeking in Europe, with simpler travel logistics.

Don't miss: Petit-Champlain after dark.

Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn, Estonia at Christmas

Best for: Medieval architecture, true winter weather, and a European Christmas market outside the most familiar cities.

Tallinn's UNESCO-listed Old Town gives its Christmas market a setting that is difficult to recreate: medieval streets, merchant houses, churches, defensive walls, and intimate courtyards.

The 2026 Tallinn Christmas Market runs from November 20 through January 6 in Town Hall Square. A large tree anchors the market, while stalls offer Estonian food, handicrafts, gingerbread, and warm drinks. Tallinn's tourism authority traces a public Christmas-tree tradition in the square to 1441, among Europe's earliest documented examples.

The market feels connected to the city rather than placed on top of it. Leave Town Hall Square, and the smaller lanes and courtyards continue the experience.

Don't miss: Explore the side streets and courtyards of Old Town after visiting the market.

Bolzano, Italy

Bolzano, Italy at Christmas

Best for: Christmas markets, Alpine scenery, Italian food, and access to the Dolomites.

Bolzano sits in South Tyrol near the Dolomites, where Italian and Austrian influences meet. During Advent, that blend comes through in the food, architecture, and local traditions.

The Bolzano Christmas Market opens November 26, 2026 and runs through January 6, centered around Piazza Walther. Its 112 vendor huts sell regional crafts, decorations, and food, including strudel, Zelten fruit bread, homemade biscuits, and mulled wine.

The mountains make Bolzano more than a market stop. Skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, and other winter activities in the nearby Dolomites make it a strong base for a longer South Tyrol itinerary.

Don't miss: Give the area more than one night; Bolzano is a natural starting point for the Dolomites.

A different way to think about Christmas travel

The best Christmas destination is not always the one with the largest market or the most recognizable name. Natchitoches brings a century-old local tradition. Solvang pairs Danish holiday events with California wine country. Québec City offers historic architecture close to home, Tallinn puts Christmas inside a medieval city, and Bolzano connects a market trip with the Dolomites.

Each is worth considering because Christmas adds something meaningful to a trip that was already worth taking.
